Vladimir Putin announced the World Combat Games to be hosted in St. Petersburg in 2013! The Games will be held October 19-26, 2013. The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for October 18.
He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the international ultimate fighting championship in Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi. “These are 120 countries and 2,000 participants. We would like our today guests to represent their countries in Russia in 2013”, Putin said.
Mikhail Ossievski, First Deputy Governor of St. Petersburg said: “Martial arts have always been popular, among the numerous sports practiced in St. Petersburg. More than 35 000 children and youngsters go to sports schools and sports clubs where they do wrestling, boxing, fencing, karate, wushu, taekwondo and other kinds of martial arts. There are hundreds of sports clubs in the city and we think that the World Combat Games will further propagate healthy lifestyle among the population and promote the philosophy of good will inherent in the sports.”
Various competitions may take place in the Ice Palace of St. Petersburg, an indoor multi-purpose complex that can accommodate more than 12 000 spectators. The Palace was specifically build for the Ice Hockey World Championships in St. Petersburg in 2000.
The selection of athletes for the SportAccord World Combat Games will be based on international rankings and results of international championships. At the same time, it is the objective to have athletes from all over the world participating.
